Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of mine, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and roll up the earth for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, from a sorrowful sight, and from a bad turn in property and family.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safari hadha minal-birri wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tardha. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi lana ardhahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fis-safari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari wa ka'abatil-manzari wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli.

When to Read

This dua is recited when embarking on a journey. While the primary focus of this specific narration is seeking ease, protection, and good deeds during travel, the request for 'righteousness and piety' can be understood to encompass seeking good company. When traveling, especially for extended periods, the character and piety of your companions significantly impact the journey. Therefore, making this dua with the intention of being with virtuous individuals is a beautiful aspiration.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely when you are about to set off on your journey. It is traditionally recited upon mounting your ride or when beginning your travel. Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible, and speak with conviction, asking Allah directly. Remember that the intention (niyyah) behind the dua is crucial; ask Allah not just for a safe journey, but for companions who will remind you of Him and encourage good deeds.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua covers several essential aspects of travel. Firstly, it asks Allah for **righteousness (birr)** and **piety (taqwa)**, which are the foundations of a Muslim's character and actions. This implicitly includes seeking companionship that embodies these qualities, as good friends inspire piety. Secondly, it seeks Allah's help in making the journey **easy** and **convenient**. Thirdly, it acknowledges Allah as the ultimate **Companion** and **Protector** of both the traveler and their family left behind. Finally, it seeks refuge from the physical and emotional **hardships** of travel. By asking for these things, a traveler is essentially asking for a journey that is spiritually beneficial, physically safe, and emotionally fulfilling, which naturally includes having companions who contribute positively to these aspects.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that when the Prophet ﷺ would mount his camel for the journey, he would glorify Allah (saying Allahu Akbar) three times, and then he would say: > **Arabic:** سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِي هَذَا مِنْ الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى ، وَمِنْ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى ، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ لَنَا أَرْضَهُ ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الأَهْلِ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالأَهْلِ. > > **Translation:** "Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it by ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will certainly return. O Allah, I ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of mine, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and roll up the earth for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, from a sorrowful sight, and from a bad turn in property and family." Then when he returned, he would say these words too, and add to them: "We are returning repentant, worshipping, praising our Lord." Sahih Muslim 1342
