Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains. O Allah, I ask You for pure provisions, accepted deeds, and a righteous Hajj.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihis-safari wa khaira ma fihi wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka zadannaqiyyan, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan, wa hajjan mabrooran.

It's recited at the moment of departure, as you physically begin your travel, whether it's by car, plane, train, or even stepping out of your home to begin the journey. The prayer encompasses seeking Allah's blessing for the journey itself and for the purpose of the travel, including good deeds and acceptance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction as you are about to leave your home or place of residence for your journey. It's best to recite it before mounting your transport. Turn towards the direction of your travel, if possible, and then recite the dua. Visualize the journey going smoothly and your purpose in the new land being beneficial.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's protection from the potential harms of travel, both physical and spiritual. It also requests the best provisions and, crucially, 'accepted deeds.' When traveling to a new land with the intention to make a positive impact, this 'accepted deed' is vital. It means our efforts, whether professional, charitable, or through our character, are pleasing to Allah and bear good fruit. It also encompasses the hope for spiritual fulfillment, like a 'righteous Hajj,' signifying a journey that purifies and brings one closer to Allah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set off on a journey, he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal 'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha waṭwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma Antal-khalifu fi ahli wa malî, wa a'udhu bika min sharri amali wa sharri madh-hali. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-kitaba fi 'adlika wa al-hukma fi yadi ka wa a'udhu bika minal-wahi wal-khabari.' (Sahih Muslim 1342) The version above is a concise summary of the supplication's essence relating to seeking the good and protection for the journey and its outcome, often used as a standard travel dua. The core request for 'accepted deeds' ( 'amalan mutaqabbalan') is present in variations of travel duas taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
