O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, and the avoidance of evil deeds, and for the love of the poor. And that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend a trial for Your creation, then take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deed which brings me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarrib ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial when embarking on a journey, especially to places where one might encounter unfamiliar environments or face greater temptations. Recite it before you depart, or during your travels when you feel the need for spiritual reinforcement.

How to Read

This dua encapsulates a deep request to Allah for guidance and strength. Raise your hands (as is customary in supplication) and recite it with sincerity and a focused heart. Reflect on each phrase: asking for the ability to do good, to shun evil, to love those who are humble, and to be protected from trials. The request for Allah's love and the love of deeds that bring one closer to Him is a powerful plea for spiritual well-being, essential for navigating any challenging situation, including temptations abroad.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly encompassing. It asks Allah for the strength to perform good deeds and abstain from forbidden ones, a crucial shield against temptations. It also seeks Allah's mercy and forgiveness, while asking for protection from fitnah (trials and tribulations). The latter part of the dua, asking for Allah's love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of actions that draw one near to Him, cultivates a deep connection with the Divine, making it easier to resist external influences that deviate from the path of righteousness.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda, wat-tuqa, wal-'afafa, wal-ghina." (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency). And he said: "O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, and the avoidance of evil deeds, and for the love of the poor. And that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend a trial for Your creation, then take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deed which brings me closer to Your love."
