Dua for a Traveler Seeking Solace from Homesickness

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite in the morning. When traveling, and especially when feeling the pangs of homesickness, turning to Allah with this supplication can bring immense comfort. It refocuses the heart on what truly matters: seeking beneficial knowledge that guides us, pure provision that sustains us, and actions that are accepted by our Creator. This can shift our perspective from what we miss to what we can gain and accomplish, even away from home.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, ideally after the Fajr prayer. Imagine yourself asking Allah directly, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Think about the knowledge, provision, and acceptance you are seeking. The act of making dua itself is a powerful way to connect with Allah and find peace, especially when you feel far from familiar surroundings.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a beautiful encapsulation of a Muslim's core needs and aspirations. Beneficial knowledge guides our actions, good provision sustains our bodies and souls, and accepted deeds are our ultimate goal. By asking for these three things, we are essentially asking for Allah's blessing in our worldly affairs and our eternal hereafter. For a traveler, this can be particularly comforting, as it reminds us that Allah's blessings are not limited by location, and that our purpose remains the same wherever we are. Sahih Muslim 7:14.

Narrated by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would most often say in the morning: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.'
