O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for Your mercy, so do not entrust me to myself for the blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs. There is no god but You.
Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihis-safari wa khayra ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka rahmataka fala takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ain, wa aslih li sha'ni kullahu, la ilaha illa ant.
When to Read
This dua is especially potent when embarking on a journey, particularly when arriving in a new place or country. Reciting it at the outset of your travels, or upon reaching your destination, invokes Allah's protection and guidance in unfamiliar surroundings. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge our dependence on Him as we step outside our usual environment.
How to Read
This dua should be recited with sincerity and humility. It's best to say it upon beginning your journey or upon arriving in the new land, ideally after dismounting from your transport. Begin by acknowledging Allah's greatness and then clearly state your request for goodness and refuge from evil. The plea for His mercy and not being left to oneself emphasizes our need for His constant support. Remember that the essence of dua is turning to Allah with a hopeful heart.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua encapsulates a traveler's core needs: seeking the best of their journey and protection from its ills. The crucial part, 'O Allah, I ask You for Your mercy, so do not entrust me to myself for the blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs,' highlights our utter reliance on Allah. Being in a new land can bring unforeseen challenges, and this supplication ensures that Allah's mercy is our shield, guiding our steps and rectifying any potential missteps. It reminds us that true safety and success come only from Him.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us many duas for different situations. This specific supplication is narrated by Abdullah ibn 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught them that when they stayed in a place during their travels, they should say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihis-safari wa khayra ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihil-barri wa khayra al-bahri, wa khayra al-ardhi wa khayra al-sama'i, wa khayra ar-riyah, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-barri wa sharri al-bahri, wa sharri al-ardhi wa sharri al-sama'i, wa sharri ar-riyah.' (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this land and the goodness of the sea, and the goodness of the earth and the goodness of the sky, and the goodness of the winds, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this land and the evil of the sea, and the evil of the earth and the evil of the sky, and the evil of the winds.) However, another narration from Sunan Abi Dawud focuses more on the plea for mercy when staying in a place, which is more directly applicable to arriving in a new land. This shorter version emphasizes our dependence on Allah's mercy: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihis-safari wa khayra ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma inni as'aluka rahmataka fala takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ain, wa aslih li sha'ni kullahu, la ilaha illa ant.' (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, I ask You for Your mercy, so do not entrust me to myself for the blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs. There is no god but You.)
