Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for the best of this journey and the best of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra haadhas-safari wa khayra ma feehi wa a'udhu bika min sharri haadhas-safari wa sharri ma feehi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is meant to be recited when you begin a journey, especially when you anticipate or encounter unexpected changes, detours, or challenges. It’s a profound way to acknowledge that our plans are often subject to Allah's decree, and to seek His blessings and protection when things don't go exactly as we envisioned. Whether it’s a flight delay, a road closure, or an unforeseen situation that alters your travel itinerary, invoking this dua at the outset or when such a change occurs can bring immense peace and divine assistance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full attention as you embark on your travels. Turn to Allah with humility, acknowledging His absolute control over all affairs. Understand that you are entrusting your journey, its outcomes, and any unforeseen circumstances to His infinite wisdom and mercy. It’s beneficial to pause for a moment, reflect on the meaning of the words, and truly feel the reliance ('tawakkul') you are placing on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, you are actively seeking the best of what Allah has decreed for your journey, even if it deviates from your initial plans. You are also seeking His protection from any potential harm, both seen and unseen. This practice cultivates a mindset of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and acceptance of His divine plan, which can transform difficulties into opportunities for growth and spiritual elevation. It’s a practical application of faith, recognizing that Allah's 'best' might not always align with our limited perception, but it is always truly beneficial for us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to cover all aspects of the journey, including the unexpected.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out on a journey, he would say: "Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra haadhas-safari wa khayra ma feehi wa a'udhu bika min sharri haadhas-safari wa sharri ma feehi." (O Allah, I ask You for the best of this journey and the best of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains). When he returned, he would say this too, and add: "Ayibuna ta'ibuna 'abiduna li Rabbina hamidun." (We are returners, repenters, worshippers, to our Lord, praising Him).
