Dua for a Traveler Facing a Crisis Far from Home

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2709

O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, and the pangs of regret upon returning, and from falling into ruin after being well-established, and from the supplication of the oppressed, and from seeing misfortune in my family, property, and children.

Allahumma Antas-Saahibu fis-safari wal-khaleefatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari wa kaa'batil-munqalabi wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa da'watil-madhloomi wa soo'il-mandhari fil-ahli wal-maali wal-waladi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly vital when traveling, especially when you find yourself in a difficult situation or a crisis far from the comfort and support of your home and loved ones. Recite it during moments of heightened anxiety, uncertainty, or when facing unexpected challenges on your journey.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep sense of reliance on Allah. Raise your hands if possible, and focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing your trust in Allah's protection and care. It is best recited upon starting a journey, but its essence is applicable during any travel crisis.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encapsulates a traveler's vulnerability and their absolute need for Allah's safeguarding. It seeks refuge from: * **The hardships of the journey (وعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ):** This includes physical difficulties, dangerous paths, and general discomfort. * **The pangs of regret upon returning (كَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ):** This refers to the sadness and remorse one might feel if the journey ends badly, or if they return having incurred loss or having failed to achieve their purpose. * **Falling into ruin after being well-established (الْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْرِ):** This is a profound seeking of refuge from experiencing a downfall after a period of prosperity or stability. * **The supplication of the oppressed (دُعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ):** A potent reminder of the gravity of injustice and the plea for protection from its repercussions, especially when one is vulnerable and far from their support system. * **Seeing misfortune in family, property, and children (سُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ وَالْوَلَدِ):** This covers all aspects of a person's worldly life and well-being, seeking protection for what is most dear.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his companions when they set out on a journey, the following supplication: 'Allahumma Antas-Saahibu fis-safari wal-khaleefatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari wa kaa'batil-munqalabi wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa da'watil-madhloomi wa soo'il-mandhari fil-ahli wal-maali wal-waladi.' (Sahih Muslim 2709)
