اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You.

Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua for seeking lawful provision and contentment. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly beneficial when facing financial worries, seeking new employment, starting a business, or simply as a daily habit to ask Allah for His continuous blessings. It’s a prayer for a life free from the need to resort to unlawful means for sustenance and free from dependence on creation.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full reliance on Allah. It is recommended to raise your hands, as is the etiquette of dua. Ensure you understand the meaning and feel the weight of the words as you utter them. Making dua after obligatory prayers is also a blessed time. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua to his cousin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), highlighting its importance for a believer seeking a blessed life.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of seeking halal (lawful) sustenance and tawakkul (reliance) on Allah. By asking Allah to suffice us with the lawful, we actively distance ourselves from haram (unlawful) earnings, which can bring hardship and curse. Asking to be enriched by Allah's grace alone means we seek contentment and freedom from dependence on others, fostering dignity and independence. This prayer helps in developing a balanced perspective on wealth – seeing it as a trust from Allah, to be earned and spent in ways that please Him.

Source & Authentication

‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught me these words and promised that if the like of Uhud mountain were gold and I were to spend it in the cause of Allah, it would not be equivalent to (saying) these words: 'Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.' (O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I may not need anyone but You). — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563. The hadith states that this dua is equivalent to spending the amount of Mount Uhud in gold, showing its immense virtue.
