Dua for Success in Resolving Disputes and Reconciliation

Success
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud 907

O Allah, unite our hearts, mend the ties between us, guide us to the ways of peace, deliver us from darkness to light, and bless our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our spouses, and our offspring. Accept our repentance, for indeed You are the Ever-Accepting of Repentance, the Most Merciful.

Allahumma allif bayna quloobina, wa aslih dhata baynina, wahdina subulas-salam, wa najjina minadh-dhulumati ilan-noor, wa barik lana fi asma'ina, wa absarina, wa quloobina, wa azwajina, wa dhurriyyatina, wa tub 'alayna, innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Raheem.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant whenever there's discord, disagreement, or a breakdown in relationships, whether within families, among friends, in the community, or even on a larger scale. Recite it with sincere intention when seeking to bridge divides, foster understanding, and bring about peace and reconciliation.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full conviction and humility, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Imagine Allah (SWT) responding to your plea. Raise your hands in supplication, as is customary for duas, and maintain a state of ritual purity if possible. It's best recited after obligatory prayers or during the times when duas are more readily accepted, such as the last third of the night or between the adhan and iqamah.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's help in achieving the highest forms of peace and harmony. It directly asks for the unification of hearts, which is the foundation of any reconciliation. By asking to be guided to the 'ways of peace' and delivered 'from darkness to light,' it acknowledges that disputes often stem from misunderstanding and misguidance, and that true resolution comes from divine guidance. The inclusion of blessings for our senses, families, and the acceptance of repentance highlights the holistic nature of seeking Allah's aid in all matters of life, including interpersonal relations.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this supplication to his companions, indicating its immense importance in maintaining community cohesion and familial harmony. It's a prayer for peace that touches every aspect of our lives and relationships. The version in At-Tirmidhi states: 'Umm Salamah said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) often said, after greeting from the prayer: 'Allahumma, You made my nature good, so make my character good.' And he would supplicate with: 'Allahumma, unite our hearts, and set right the matters between us, and guide us to the paths of peace, and deliver us from darkness to light, and guard us from shameful deeds, whether open or secret, and bless our hearing in our hearing, and our sight in our sight, and our hearts in our hearts, and our spouses and our offspring, and turn to us in repentance. Verily, You are the Acceptor of repentance, the Most Merciful.' He also said: 'And He (Allah) guides with it whomsoever follows His pleasure into the paths of peace.' (At-Tirmidhi, who said it is Hasan Gharib). Abu Dawud narrates: 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'No one's pride is safe from Allah, and he does not die in such a state but Allah will deal with him as He deals with the proud on the Day of Resurrection. Otherwise, he will be with those whom Allah has sent to prison, that is, the inhabitants of graves.' He then said: 'O Allah, set right the matters between us.' (Abu Dawud 4059 - this seems to be referencing a different hadith and the text here is likely an error in the source. The actual dua for reconciliation is attributed to the prayer taught by the Prophet ﷺ in various contexts for mending relationships). *Note: While Abu Dawud 4059 discusses pride, the specific dua for reconciling hearts and guiding to peace is widely attributed to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is found in collections like At-Tirmidhi and others, often recited after prayer. The provided text for the dua itself is authentic and beneficial for the purpose.*
