اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful (provision) against Your unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need anyone other than You.

Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This profound dua is perfect to recite during the application process for a scholarship or grant, particularly after submitting your application and while awaiting a decision. It's also fitting to make it before, during, and after interviews or any selection stages. Making it a regular practice during your study time, perhaps before dawn (Tahajjud) or after obligatory prayers (Salat), can imbue your efforts with blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, believing that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate provider. Raise your hands in supplication, focusing on the meaning of the words. It's recommended to begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Maintain a state of ritual purity (wudu) if possible, and face the Qiblah. The essence is heartfelt reliance on Allah, asking Him to grant you provision through lawful means, which in this context, is the scholarship or grant, and to make you independent of needing anything from creation.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's provision through lawful means, which is essential for blessings and barakah in one's sustenance and endeavors. It also calls for reliance on Allah alone (Tawakkul), recognizing that true richness comes from Him and not from people. By asking to be made independent of others, we are essentially asking Allah to remove any need or dependency that could lead to humiliation or compromise. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this dua to seek financial sufficiency and contentment, showing its power in obtaining what is needed through permissible and blessed channels. It steers us away from seeking help from those who might be displeased with us or who might ask for something unacceptable in return.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and asked him to write something for him. He replied: 'Allah has not caused anyone to leave behind anything (in inheritance), nor has He commanded you concerning any inheritance. So, the first of you to join Allah, let him join while he is a believer, and the last of you to join Allah, let him join while he is a believer. O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful (provision) against Your unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need anyone other than You.' (Allahumma, akfini bi halalik 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi fadlik 'amman siwak). [Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563, graded Hasan Ghareeb by some scholars]
