O Allah, I ask You for the doing of Your good deeds, and the abandoning of Your prohibitions, and the love of the poor. And that You forgive me and have mercy upon me. And when You intend for Your creation a trial, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.
Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayratik, wa tark munakaratik, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fatawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it is particularly potent when seeking guidance and strength to pursue righteous paths and good opportunities. Recite it after your obligatory prayers, during the night, or whenever you feel the need for Allah's support in making beneficial choices and avoiding harmful ones. It's especially relevant when embarking on new ventures, seeking knowledge, or aiming for spiritual growth.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and full concentration, visualizing the good deeds you wish to perform and the positive outcomes you seek. Ensure you understand the meaning of each phrase. Raising your hands slightly during the dua, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, can enhance the feeling of supplication. Make a sincere intention to follow through on the good deeds you ask Allah to enable you to do.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses a powerful request for divine assistance in actively doing good and abstaining from evil, which are foundational for attracting positive opportunities. Seeking the 'love of those who love You' and 'the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love' aligns your desires with Allah's pleasure, naturally drawing opportunities that are pleasing to Him and beneficial for your deen and dunya. The request for forgiveness and mercy is a constant need, and asking to be taken without being tested by fitnah (trial) shows reliance on Allah's protection. The love of the poor, a quality the Prophet ﷺ himself embodied, is a sign of humility and spiritual wealth, often opening doors of blessing.
Source & Authentication
Narrated 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, righteousness, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3233, Sunan Ibn Majah 3831). The version used in the entry is a more comprehensive and widely cited phrasing of a similar supplication, emphasizing the doing of good deeds and the love of Allah and righteous actions.
