Dua for Strength to Overcome Vices and Sins

Success
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالتُّقَىٰ وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَىٰ

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a profound supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make. We can recite it regularly, especially when feeling a pull towards a vice, struggling with a particular sin, or simply seeking Allah's help to stay on the righteous path. Making it a part of your daily supplications, perhaps after Salah or in the early morning, can build a strong foundation of reliance on Allah for spiritual strength.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, raising your hands as is the etiquette of dua. Focus on the meaning of each word: guidance (to the truth), piety (consciousness of Allah), chastity (purity from sins, especially forbidden desires), and contentment (satisfaction with what Allah has provided). Believe that Allah is the only one who can grant you the strength to overcome your weaknesses.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses the core elements needed to combat personal vices and sins. Asking for guidance means asking Allah to show you the right way and help you adhere to it. Piety (Taqwa) is the constant awareness of Allah, which acts as a shield against sin. Chastity (Afaf) refers to abstaining from what is unlawful, protecting oneself from forbidden acts and thoughts. Contentment (Ghina) means being satisfied with Allah's decree and provision, which reduces the craving for worldly temptations that often lead to sin. By asking for these four things, we are essentially asking Allah for the complete package needed for spiritual well-being and victory over our lower selves.
