Dua for Seeking a Cure from Illness

Success
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5738

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land, and the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqatu ba'dina, yushfa saqeemunā, bi'idni Rabbina.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when performed as a form of Ruqyah (Islamic spiritual healing). It's recited while taking some of the earth (soil) from a place and mixing it with the saliva of the one reciting, then applying it to the afflicted area or the patient while reciting this supplication. It's a profound act of seeking Allah's help through His creation, acknowledging His power over all things, including illness and cure.

How to Read

The recitation should be done with full conviction and reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). It involves a physical act combined with the spoken word: gathering soil, mixing it with saliva, and applying it to the sick person while uttering the dua. The sincerity of the heart and the firm belief that the cure is ultimately from Allah are paramount. It's also recommended to perform ablution (Wudu) and face the Qiblah if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the Islamic principle that even the seemingly ordinary elements of nature can be a means of healing when empowered by Allah's command. It teaches us that all causes for cure are ultimately from Him. By using the soil and saliva, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed us how to combine spiritual supplication with tangible actions, demonstrating the interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual realms in seeking relief. It fosters a deep sense of dependence on Allah alone.

Source & Authentication

‘A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when a person among them was sick, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rub his hand [on the patient's body] and say: > **Arabic:** بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا > **Translation:** "In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land, and the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5738, Sahih Muslim 2194). The Prophet ﷺ would also tell them to apply it to the patient, and sometimes he would say: "Our soil, with the saliva of some of us, our sick are healed by our Lord's permission." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5737). This illustrates the Prophet's ﷺ method of treating illness by invoking Allah's name and using means that He has created.
