O Allah, make me truly grateful, make me little deluded [by success], make me small in my own eyes, and great in the eyes of people.
Allahumma ij'alni shakooran, waj'alni qaleelal-ightiraar, waj'alni fi 'ayni sagheeran, wa 'indan-naasi kabeeran.
When to Read
Recite this dua regularly, especially when you experience success, big or small. It's a plea to Allah to maintain a balanced perspective, preventing arrogance and entitlement from creeping in as your fortunes improve. Make it part of your daily supplications to ingrain the quality of humility.
How to Read
Raise your hands in supplication, face the Qiblah if possible, and recite with sincerity and focus. Understand the meaning of each phrase and ponder its significance in your life. Beseech Allah with a humble heart, acknowledging that all success is from Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates the core of remaining grounded. True gratitude (Shukr) is not just verbal but a state of the heart that recognizes blessings as coming from Allah. Guarding against delusion (ightirar) means acknowledging that success is a test, not a permanent state, and can be taken away. Being small in one's own eyes combats ego and self-importance, a critical antidote to the pride that often accompanies achievement. Finally, being great in the eyes of people is a consequence of sincere humility and excellent character, reflecting positively on one's worship and worldly dealings.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'O Allah, make me truly grateful, make me little deluded [by success], make me small in my own eyes, and great in the eyes of people.' (Reported by Al-Hakim and authenticated by him, and Ad-Dhahabi agreed. Found in Shu'ab al-Iman by Al-Bayhaqi, no. 7501). The chain of narration is considered Hasan.
