The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of seeking Allah's complete protection from all forms of evil. When a person recites this in the morning, nothing will harm them until the evening. And when a person recites it in the evening, nothing will harm them until the morning. This includes protection from physical harm, unseen evils, and any negative influences that could affect one's family.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I was stung by a scorpion last night.' He said: 'If you had said, when evening came: A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), it would not have harmed you.' It was narrated from him (Abu Hurairah) that he said: 'A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah! I was stung by a scorpion last night.' He said: 'Had you recited this dua in the evening: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), it would not have harmed you.' Something similar was narrated by Zuhair from him.
