Dua for Healing and Strength During Illness

Success
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا.

In the name of Allah, with the soil of our earth and the saliva of some of us, may our sick be healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idni Rabbina.

When to Read

This powerful dua is traditionally recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when visiting someone who is ill. It's perfect to say when you or a loved one is unwell, as a supplication for Allah's healing. Recite it with conviction, placing your hand on the person (or the area of pain if it's yourself), and combining it with the physical act of applying a remedy.

How to Read

The method described involves combining the dua with a tangible act. The Prophet ﷺ would take the soil from the ground, mix it with his saliva, and then apply it to the afflicted area. While we can emulate this by finding clean soil (or even symbolically using a clean cloth if soil is unavailable) and mixing it with a tiny bit of water or even just making the intention, the core is the sincerity of the supplication. Make sure to say 'Bismillah' before starting. It's best to be in a state of purity (wudu) if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the essence of seeking healing directly from Allah, using natural elements as a means. It teaches us that even in sickness, we should turn to our Creator, acknowledging His power to heal. The Prophet's ﷺ action shows us that we should also take practical steps and use available remedies, believing that the ultimate cure comes from Allah. It reinforces Tawakkul (trust in Allah) while engaging in action.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Aisha: (The practice of applying the medicament for the disease was prevalent among us and we used to say to the physician.) Allah's Apostle ﷺ visited me once. I was suffering from a fever. He touched me with his hand and said, 'May Allah cure you. You get fever on Tuesdays. On the authority of the narrator, he said: 'May Allah cure you. You get fever on Tuesdays and the prayer of a Muslim is efficacious for him.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! This is excessive, but the prayer of a Muslim is efficacious for him.' So Allah's Apostle ﷺ said, 'The prayer of a Muslim is efficacious for him for whom it is offered.' Then he invoked Allah for me. Then he said, 'Take this medicine, O Aisha, and let the person who is suffering from fever rub the medicine with his fingers and say: 'Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idni Rabbina.' Meaning: 'In the name of Allah, the dust of our ground and the saliva of some of us will cure our patient by the permission of our Lord.'
