اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنِي الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ
O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom.
Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hikmah
When to Read
This powerful dua is best recited after every obligatory prayer, or during the times when supplication is most likely to be answered, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah. It's particularly fitting to make this dua when you feel a strong desire to deepen your understanding of Islamic teachings, whether you're starting a new study session or seeking clarity on a particular issue.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart, understanding that true knowledge and wisdom are gifts from Allah. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for any other dua, showing your reliance and earnestness. Reflect on the meaning of 'the Book' (Al-Quran) and 'wisdom' (Al-Hikmah) – encompassing the Sunnah and the understanding that comes with it. Then, implement the knowledge you gain in your life and share it with others.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit is directly seeking Allah's aid in acquiring both the revealed scripture (the Quran) and profound understanding and practical wisdom. This dua encapsulates the desire to not just know the Quran, but to comprehend its meanings and act upon its guidance, and to embody the wisdom that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodied and taught. Seeking knowledge is a highly virtuous act in Islam, and asking Allah for it specifically is a sign of deep faith and reliance.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the following words, just as he taught us a Surah from the Qur'an: 'Allahumma 'allimni al-kitaba wal-hikmah' (O Allah, teach me the Book and wisdom)." Sunan Ibn Majah 251. While the hadith itself is graded Hasan, the concept of seeking knowledge and wisdom is fundamental throughout the Quran and Sunnah.
