O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to test Your servants with a trial, take me to Yourself without my being tested. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa idha aradta bi'ibadika fitnah, fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial to make it part of your daily duas, perhaps after each prayer. It addresses fundamental aspects of faith, action, and reliance on Allah, seeking His favor in this life and the next.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you normally would for supplication. Ensure you understand the meaning of the words as you utter them, reflecting on each request you make to Allah. You can make this dua in your own language too, expressing the same sentiments.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly comprehensive. It asks Allah to guide us towards doing good deeds (khayrat) and abstaining from what is forbidden (munkarat), which are cornerstones of living a righteous life. It also asks for the love of the poor (hubbal masakin), fostering empathy and compassion. Crucially, it seeks protection from trials (fitnah) and asks for the ultimate honor of returning to Allah in a state of faith. The final part connects our actions to His love, emphasizing that true worship and success lie in loving Allah, loving those He loves, and pursuing deeds that draw us closer to Him.

Source & Authentication

Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us to say seven things and forbade us from seven things. He commanded us to attend funerals, to visit the sick, to accept invitations, to return a greeting, to help the oppressed, to fulfill oaths, and to spread the greetings of peace. He forbade us from wearing silk, gold, silver cups, silk carpets, Qassi clothes, and from wearing silk woven with gold. He commanded us to say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa idha aradta bi'ibadika fitnah, fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to test Your servants with a trial, take me to Yourself without my being tested. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.)
