O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
When to Read
This comprehensive supplication, often used for the deceased, carries profound meaning when adapted for someone facing significant life changes. When your spouse is navigating the emotional, physical, and spiritual shifts of midlife – perhaps questioning past decisions, feeling uncertain about the future, or experiencing a loss of purpose – you can recite this dua. It's about invoking Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and guidance for them during a pivotal, often challenging, period. Recite it with sincere intention, perhaps during your own personal supplications (dua), after prayers, or before sleeping.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and conviction, visualizing your spouse receiving Allah's blessings and comfort. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, understanding it as a heartfelt plea to the Almighty for your spouse's well-being. If you are reciting it for your spouse's benefit while they are alive, you can adapt the pronouns to address them directly (e.g., 'Allahumma-ghfir laka war-hamka...') or continue using the third person ('lahu'/'laha') as a general supplication for them. It is also beneficial to make dua for yourself to have patience and wisdom during this time.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, rooted in a prophetic supplication, encapsulates the most comprehensive requests for a believer's well-being. When directed towards a spouse experiencing midlife transitions, it serves as a powerful act of love and support. It seeks Allah's forgiveness and mercy, acknowledging that everyone errs, especially during times of confusion. Asking for 'well-being and pardon' (عَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ) is a plea for both physical and spiritual health, and for sins to be overlooked. The requests for an 'honored reception' and 'spacious grave' (أَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ) symbolize a smooth transition and a comfortable state, both in this life and the next. By asking Allah to 'replace their home, family, and spouse with better' (وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ، وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ), you are essentially praying for their contentment and for positive changes and support systems to surround them, even if it means a transformation in their current circumstances. Ultimately, it's a plea for Paradise and protection from Hellfire, the ultimate goals for any believer.

It was narrated from 'Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for a deceased person. He said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'Or he said: 'And his wife with a better wife.' (And the narrator said:) 'And protect him from the punishment of the Fire and the grave.'
