Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is a beautiful starting point when you see your spouse struggling. You can recite it with sincerity during any prayer, especially after your obligatory prayers (salat). Holding your hands up in supplication while making dua is a Sunnah, and can be done in private or while gently offering comfort to your spouse.

How to Read

Make this dua with absolute conviction in Allah's ability to respond. Visualize your spouse finding strength and peace. Begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking for beneficial knowledge, pure sustenance, and deeds that are accepted by Allah. These are foundational requests that can lead to overall well-being and resilience.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific phrasing is a general supplication for a good life, its application to a spouse's struggle with depression is profound. By asking for beneficial knowledge, we pray that Allah grants them understanding and wisdom to navigate their challenges. Asking for good provision (rizq tayyib) can alleviate financial worries that often exacerbate mental health struggles. Most importantly, asking for acceptable deeds reminds us and our loved ones of the ultimate purpose of our lives, fostering a sense of hope and connection to our Creator, which is a powerful antidote to despair. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this dua after finishing his lesson.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say when he had finished his prayer: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. (O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, provision that is good and pure, and deeds that are accepted.) — Sunan Ibn Majah 925. It is also mentioned in Sunan An-Nasa'i. The scholars have noted its authenticity as Hasan.
