Sleep Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Your might, lest I go astray or be led astray, or slip or cause others to slip, or do wrong or be wronged, or act foolishly or be acted upon foolishly.

Bismillahi, a'udhu bi'izzatika an adalla aw uzalla, aw adilla aw azilla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited before sleeping. It encapsulates a comprehensive plea for protection against all forms of harm, including those that might stem from the ill-will of others, such as jealousy and envy.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely before you lay down to sleep. Place your right hand on your right side, and say it three times. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah's might, acknowledging His ultimate power and control over all affairs. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though the primary focus is the sincerity of your heart and your reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly comprehensive. By seeking refuge in Allah's might (عِزَّتِكَ - 'izzatika), we acknowledge His supreme power and sovereignty. The Prophet ﷺ's specific wording protects us from straying from the straight path, from causing others to stray, from committing injustice, from being subjected to injustice, and from ignorance or foolishness, whether we are the perpetrators or the victims. In the context of sleep, it offers protection against unseen harms that might manifest in dreams or impact our state upon waking, including anxieties fueled by jealousy or envy directed towards us.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When you go to bed at night, say: Bismillahi, a'udhu bi'izzatika an adalla aw uzalla, aw adilla aw azilla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Your might, lest I go astray or be led astray, or slip or cause others to slip, or do wrong or be wronged, or act foolishly or be acted upon foolishly). And when you wake up, say: Alhamdu lillahi alladhi 'afani fi jasadi wa radda 'alayya ruhi wa adhana bi dhikrihi (Praise be to Allah Who kept health in my body, returned my soul to me and permitted me to remember Him).'
