Dua When Turning Over During Sleep

Sleep Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

There is no god but Allah, the One, the Subduer. Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Exalted in Might, the Ever-Forgiving.

La ilaha illallahul-Wahidul-Qahhar, Rabbus-samawati war-ardi wa ma bainahumal-'Azizul-Ghaffar

When to Read

This dua is recited when you wake up during the night, perhaps after turning over or experiencing restlessness. It's a moment of mindfulness, reconnecting with Allah when you're most vulnerable and often most thoughtful.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. It's a declaration of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and acknowledgment of His dominion and mercy. Consider what each attribute of Allah mentioned – Al-Wahid (The One), Al-Qahhar (The Subduer), Al-'Aziz (The Exalted in Might), Al-Ghaffar (The Ever-Forgiving) – signifies for you personally.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of seeking Allah's protection and forgiveness. Reciting it when one turns over in sleep is a way to turn our hearts back to Allah, acknowledging His sovereignty over all things. It's a powerful affirmation that even in our sleep-disrupted moments, we are mindful of our Creator, which can lead to immense forgiveness and peace. The hadith states that whoever recites this dua, Allah says: 'Do not ask Me for anything, for I shall give it to you.' (Sahih Muslim 2708)

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Hudhayfah that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ went to bed at night, he would say: ‘Bismika amutu wa ahya.’ And when he woke up, he would say: ‘Al-hamdu lillahi alladhi ahyana ba’da ma amata-na wa ilayhin-nushoor.’ (Praise be to Allah Who gave us life after death, and to Him is the return.) And when he wanted to sleep or wake up from sleep, he would supplicate with this dua: ‘La ilaha illallahul-Wahidul-Qahhar, Rabbus-samawati war-ardi wa ma bainahumal-'Azizul-Ghaffar.’ (There is no god but Allah, the One, the Subduer. Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Exalted in Might, the Ever-Forgiving.) If one of you turns over in his bed during the night and says: ‘La ilaha illallahul-Wahidul-Qahhar, Rabbus-samawati war-ardi wa ma bainahumal-'Azizul-Ghaffar.’ Allah says: ‘Do not ask Me for anything, for I shall give it to you.’
