O Allah, awaken me by the name most beloved to You, while I am saying: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things. Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. O Allah, forgive me. Or he said: My Lord, forgive me.

Allahummaghfir li. Aw qala: Rabbighfir li.

When to Read

This dua is recited upon waking up during the night, especially with the intention of performing Tahajjud (night prayer). It serves as a beautiful invocation to begin your night vigil, seeking Allah's assistance to rise for worship.

How to Read

Recite this dua immediately upon becoming conscious during the night. It's a moment of connecting with Allah before engaging in prayer or other acts of worship. Ensure you understand the meaning and focus your heart on the words.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication combines several powerful phrases that acknowledge Allah's oneness, dominion, and power. By reciting it upon waking, you are essentially consecrating your awakening to Allah, asking Him to help you remember Him and seek His forgiveness, which is a perfect start to Tahajjud. The reliance on 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no might nor power except with Allah) is particularly significant when preparing for a challenging but rewarding act like Tahajjud.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Dharr that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever gets up at night to pray the last ten verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, it will be a light for him for the night until morning. And whoever gets up at night to pray, and it is difficult for him, and he recites the ten verses that are between the last verses of Al-Baqarah, then he will be rewarded the like of what was prayed by the one who recited the whole of Al-Baqarah. And whoever gets up at night to pray, and it is difficult for him, and he recites the verses that are between the last verses of Al-Baqarah, then he will be rewarded the like of what was prayed by the one who recited the whole of Al-Baqarah. And when he wakes up, he says: 'O Allah, awaken me by the name most beloved to You, and I am saying: La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Allahummaghfir li.' Or he said: 'My Lord, forgive me.'"
