O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and accepted deeds. When the Prophet, peace be upon him, entered the evening, he would say: 'O Allah, by You we enter the evening, and by You we enter the morning, by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is our final return. And when he entered the morning, he would say: 'O Allah, by You we enter the morning, and by You we enter the evening, by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.'

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. Idha amsa an-Nabiyyu sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam qala: 'Allahumma bika nusbihu, wa bika namsi, wa bika nahya, wa bika namootu, wa ilaykal-maseer. Wa idha asbaha qala: 'Allahumma bika nusbihu, wa bika namsi, wa bika nahya, wa bika namootu, wa ilaykan-nushoor.'

When to Read

This dua is beautifully suited for the time of sunset, as you transition from the day's activities into the evening. It's also highly beneficial to recite the second part of it, as found in the same narration, upon waking in the morning. This practice encapsulates seeking Allah's help and dependence for both the coming night and the approaching day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and reflection, acknowledging your complete reliance on Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for your existence, your provisions, and your ultimate return. As you say 'Allahumma bika nusbihu, wa bika namsi...', visualize the entirety of your day and night being encompassed by Allah's power and will.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua in the evening and morning reaffirms our core belief in Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and our dependence on Him for every aspect of our lives. It helps to cultivate a mindset of gratitude for the time we have and a sense of peace knowing that our affairs are in the hands of the Most Merciful. The initial request for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds is a powerful way to seal the day, ensuring that what we have sought and achieved is pleasing to Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): When it was evening, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would say: 'O Allah, by You we enter the evening, and by You we enter the morning, by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is our final return.' When it was morning, he would say: 'O Allah, by You we enter the morning, and by You we enter the evening, by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.'
