Sleep Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3873

O Allah, I ask You for a righteous vision that will delight my heart and comfort my soul, and that You may show me in it what I love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka ru'yan salihah tasurru qalbi wa tutma'innu nafsi, wa an tara fiha ma uhibb.

When to Read

This dua is recited just before going to sleep. After performing Wudu (ablution) and any other prescribed sleep Sunnahs, such as reciting Ayatul Kursi and the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas), you can place your right hand under your cheek, face the Qiblah, and recite this supplication. It's a beautiful way to invite good dreams and positive thoughts into your rest.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart. Imagine your heart being filled with peace and your soul finding comfort as you utter these words. Focus on the meaning and the reliance you are placing on Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for your dreams. It's recommended to face the Qiblah, as this is a Sunnah for many acts of worship, including making dua while lying down to sleep.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking a righteous vision from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) before sleep can lead to dreams that are a source of joy and reassurance. These dreams can act as a form of divine guidance, encouragement, or even a pleasant reflection of one's good deeds and aspirations. By asking Allah to show you what you love, you are entrusting your subconscious state to His infinite wisdom and mercy, seeking a peaceful and uplifting experience during sleep, which in turn can positively impact your waking hours.

Source & Authentication

Ibn Majah narrated from Abu Salama bin 'Abdur-Rahman that some of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw in a dream that they were suffering. They mentioned that to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he said: 'The vision of a believer is a part of the forty-six parts of prophecy.' Then he narrated a similar narration, and he said: 'A righteous vision from time to time is a part of forty-six parts of prophecy.' Then he mentioned a similar narration: 'The vision of a believer is a part of the forty-six parts of prophecy. Narrated from Thawban that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you performs Wudu and then sleeps on his bed, he should lie on his right side, then say: "O Allah, I have surrendered my face to You, and entrusted my affairs to You, and sought refuge in You for Your desire and Your fear. I have not sought refuge in anyone except You. Verily, I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and Your Prophet whom You have sent." If he dies on that night, he dies on the Fitrah (natural disposition). Let this be the last statement he makes.' Thawban said: 'And when I narrated this hadith to 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, he said: 'How excellent are these words of yours that you have narrated to me! I ask you, O Messenger of Allah, what if one does not say it during the day? He said: 'Say it when you go to bed at night.'" Narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman: 'I used to see visions that made me sick. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I see visions that make me sick.' He said: 'What about your vision?' I said: 'I see myself being beaten.' He said: 'That is from Shaitan, so when you see that, seek refuge in Allah from him and do not tell anyone about it.' Then I saw a vision that pleased me, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I see visions that please me.' He said: 'What about your vision?' I said: 'I see myself in a garden of trees.' He said: 'This is from Allah. When any of you sees what he likes, let him praise Allah for it and speak about it (to others).' Abu Salamah said: 'I have not seen any vision since then except that I know that it is from Allah.' (This is a lengthy hadith with several parts, this is the relevant section for the vision part). The specific dua for a righteous vision before sleep is cited by scholars based on the general guidance of seeking good from Allah during sleep, and this formulation is commonly used.
