I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His slaves, and from the suggestions of devils and from their presence.
A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.
When to Read
This dua is specifically recommended to be recited before sleeping, especially when you are in an unfamiliar place like a hotel, a friend's house, or any location away from your usual safe surroundings. Sleeping away from home can expose us to different environments and potential unseen disturbances, making this supplication a vital shield.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely, focusing on the meaning and the seeking of Allah's protection. It's a Sunnah practice to recite it as you are about to sleep. Place your right hand on your side, or on your cheek if you prefer, and say it with conviction. Imagine Allah's perfect words enveloping you in safety.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua offers immense protection from various forms of harm. It safeguards you from Allah's displeasure and punishment, shielding you from the malice of other people, and critically, it acts as a barrier against the whispers and ill influences of Shaytan. When you're away from home, the usual sense of security might be lessened, making this dua particularly potent for peace of mind and spiritual well-being.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any of you goes to bed, he should say: أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ، وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ (A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.) For verily they will do him no harm.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3892). The narrator Abu al-Walid said: 'I was told by Hisham that his father used to say this dua when he went to bed.' The hadith is classified as Hasan by some scholars. This indicates its authenticity and the Prophet's ﷺ emphasis on its importance for protection.
