O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and from the torment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayah wal-mawat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.
When to Read
This is one of the most profound duas the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite before going to sleep. It’s a comprehensive plea for refuge from major evils, including the torment of the grave, which is a significant station we will all face after this life.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and full concentration before you lie down to sleep. You can recite it once, or as many times as you wish. It’s beneficial to understand the meaning of each part of the dua and to feel its weight as you utter the words, asking Allah for His protection.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful shield against severe trials. By seeking refuge in Allah from the torment of the grave, we are asking for His mercy to ease our journey into the hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ taught this specific dua because the grave is a place of questioning and potential torment. Its inclusion also covers protection from the Hellfire and the trials of this world and the next, particularly the deception of the Dajjal. The companions would teach this dua to their children just as they would teach them an entire Surah of the Quran.

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke Allah during his prayer, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wa al-mamat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-ma'tham wa al-maghram (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from sin and debt).' A person said to him: 'What a lot you ask for protection from seeking refuge!' He said: 'I seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the Dajjal.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1377). In another narration from Sahih Muslim, it specifies seeking refuge from the torment of the Fire as well: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayah wal-mawat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal' (Sahih Muslim 589).
