Sleep Duas
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 832 (Bukhari), 588 (Muslim)

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and the torment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab jahannam, wa fitnat al-mahya wal-mamat, wa shar fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited just before sleeping. It's a beautiful practice that our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us, turning our final moments before rest into a conscious act of seeking Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. It's often recited after the evening prayer (Isha) or just as you are settling down to sleep. You can place your right hand on your right side, as the Prophet ﷺ would do when sleeping. Make sure you understand the meaning of each phrase, allowing it to resonate in your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from four critical fears: the torment of the grave, the torment of Hellfire, the trials of this life and the next, and the specific evil of the Dajjal. By reciting this, we are actively engaging with the unseen realities and asking Allah, the Most Merciful, to shield us from these immense trials. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording because these are indeed profound dangers that we have no power to avert on our own.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and the torment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 832 and Sahih Muslim 588). Another narration from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) mentions the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: 'When the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up for the night prayer, he would say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa 'adhab an-nar, wa fitnat al-qabr, wa fitnat al-ghina (meaning the trial of wealth). And when he would go to bed, he would say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min Rabb al-sama wa Rabb al-ard, Rabb al-'arsh al-'azim, sabba al-samawat wa al-ard, anta waliyyi fid-dunya wal-akhirah, tawaffani Musliman wa alhiqni bis-salihin (O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Mighty Throne, Revealer of the heavens and the earth, You are my Wali in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous). (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 and Sahih Muslim 2711)
