Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1377

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayaati wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masih ad-Dajjal.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is specifically recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be recited after the Tashahhud in every prayer, before concluding the prayer. It's a crucial part of seeking Allah's protection during the prayer, a state of direct communion with our Creator, making our requests particularly potent. Making it a habit to recite this dua ensures we are consciously asking for protection from a very real and significant trial.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding the gravity of what you are asking Allah for. Focus on the meaning of each phrase. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge with Allah, so make your intention clear to ask for His protection directly. It's best recited with the body in the posture of prayer, after reciting the Tashahhud and before the final salutations.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from four significant evils: the torment of the grave, the torment of the Hellfire, the trials and tribulations of this life and the hereafter, and the specific evil of the Dajjal. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often seek refuge in Allah from these very things, indicating their immense importance. By consistently reciting this, we are actively engaging in seeking Allah's divine protection against these severe trials, both in this world and the next. Sahih Muslim 589 mentions that Allah's Messenger ﷺ taught them to seek refuge in Allah from these four things.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When any one of you finishes the (final) Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab jahannam, wa min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-maut, wa min sharri fitnatil-masih ad-Dajjal. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of Hell, and from the torment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah [Dajjal]).' Then he narrated one of you say his prayer.
