Sleep Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 742

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provisions, and acceptable deeds. O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You gather Your creation.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tajma'u 'ibadak.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited in the evening, after the 'Asr prayer, and specifically before going to sleep. It's a comprehensive prayer seeking protection and blessings throughout the day and night.

How to Read

It is part of a longer narration where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say three things in the morning and three things in the evening. When sleeping, he would place his right hand under his cheek. This specific part is recited before sleep, after seeking knowledge, sustenance, and acceptance of deeds.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encompasses seeking essential worldly and otherworldly benefits: beneficial knowledge that guides us, pure sustenance that nourishes us, and deeds that are accepted by Allah. The second part directly asks for protection from Allah's punishment, especially relevant as we surrender ourselves to sleep, in need of His constant care.

Source & Authentication

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not sleep at night or during the day without reciting the following supplications: When he stayed up at night or during the day, he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provisions, and acceptable deeds.) When he intended to sleep, he would lie down on his right side and say: 'Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tajma'u 'ibadak.' (O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You gather Your creation.)
