In the name of Allah, the Most Gentle, the Most Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the immense Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, I ask of You the means to Your mercy, the resolve to Your forgiveness, safety from every sin, and the gain of every good deed, and deliverance from every evil. I ask You not to leave any sin of mine except that You forgive it, nor any worry except that You relieve it, nor any need that is pleasing to You except that You fulfill it, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Bismillahi, la ilaha illa huwal-haleemul-kareem. Subhanallahi Rabbil-'arshil-'adheem. Al-hamdulillahi Rabbil-'alameen. Allahumma inni as'aluka nawala rahmatik, wa 'aza'ima maghfiratik, was-salamata min kulli dambin, wal-ghaneemata min kulli birrin, wan-najjata min kulli ithmin. As'aluka an la tada'a li damban illa ghafartah, wa la hamma illa farrajtah, wa la haajatan hiya laka ridan illa qadaytaha ya Arhamar-rahimeen.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a deep reliance on Allah. By acknowledging His attributes (Gentle, Generous, Lord of the Throne) and asking for His mercy, forgiveness, safety, and fulfillment of needs, we turn to the ultimate source of all comfort and solutions. It helps shift our focus from our sleeplessness to Allah's power to overcome it, bringing peace of mind and a greater sense of hope.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Umamah that the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When any one of you goes to bed, and he has not prayed (Fajr) yet, let him say: 'O Allah, send down your mercy upon me, and do not take me away until I am pleased with You.' And let him say: 'O Allah, teach me the best of manners, and grant me the best of deeds, for no one teaches me except You.' And let him say: 'O Allah, I ask You for a blessed life, and for death when it is a rest from all evil.' And when he wants to sleep, let him say: 'O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and the mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, Revealer of the Tawrah, the Injeel, and the Qur'an, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every moving creature that You seize by the forelock. You are the First, and there is nothing before You; You are the Last, and there is nothing after You; You are the apparent, and there is nothing above You; You are the hidden, and there is nothing beneath You. Ward off from me the debt and enrich me from poverty.' (Sahih Muslim 2713). The Hadith provided above is a collection of supplications taught by the Prophet (ﷺ). The specific dua for sleeplessness mentioned in the JSON entry is often quoted as a general supplication for when one is troubled and seeking relief, drawing upon similar themes of seeking Allah's mercy and guidance. Another relevant hadith regarding sleep is: Narrated by Al-Bara' bin 'Azib: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whenever you go to bed, perform Wudu' like that for the prayer, then lie on your right side and say: 'Allahumma inni aslamtu wajhi ilaika, wa fawwadtu amri ilaika, wa alja'tu thahri ilaika raghbatan wa rahbatan ilaika, la malja'a wala manja minka illa ilaika. Amantu bikitabikalladhi anzalta wa nabiyyikalladhi arsalta.' (O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, entrusted my affairs to You, and turned my face towards You for protection, being desirous of You and fearful of You. There is no shelter or refuge but with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.) If you die that night, you will die on *Fitra* (natural disposition). Let these words be your last.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5909). While this hadith focuses on general bedtime supplication for protection, the first hadith excerpted is more directly applicable to the need for relief from distress that causes sleeplessness.
