Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5675

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.

Allahumma Rabba an-nas, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi antash-Shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqama.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant when a person is afflicted with a serious illness, experiencing prolonged suffering, or when conventional treatments seem to offer little hope. It's a plea directed to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) when feelings of hopelessness start to creep in, reminding us that ultimate recovery and relief are solely in His hands. Recite it during times of intense sickness, whether for yourself or for a loved one, with a heart full of conviction in Allah's ability to heal.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, directing your plea solely to Allah, the Exalted. Place your hand on the area of pain or illness while reciting, or on the sick person if you are reciting for them. It is recommended to repeat the dua three times. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us the etiquette of dua by doing this himself. Maintain a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and face the Qiblah while making dua. Most importantly, have absolute certainty that Allah has the power to answer your supplication and heal the person.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the core of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) by acknowledging Him as the ultimate Healer, independent of any means. It affirms our complete reliance on Allah, especially during times when worldly efforts fall short. By reciting this, we are not only seeking physical healing but also spiritual solace and strength. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in the most desperate situations, hope lies with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself would recite this dua for those who were sick, demonstrating its profound importance and effectiveness.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When a person among them (the companions) had an ailment, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would treat him by passing his hand (over the affected part) and say: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ البَأْسَ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا. (Allahumma Rabba an-nas, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi antash-Shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqama.) Translation: 'O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering.
