بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا
In the name of Allah, with the soil of our earth, and the saliva of some of us, may our sick be healed by the permission of our Lord.
Bismillahi, turbatu ardi-na, riqu ba'di-na, yushfa saqimu-na, bi-idhn rubbi-na.
When to Read
This dua is particularly relevant when facing an illness that affects not just the body, but also the mind, causing distress, anxiety, or despair. It's recited by the sick person or by a caregiver for them, when the mental struggle feels as significant as the physical symptoms. It can be recited during moments of profound sadness or when feeling overwhelmed by the illness.
How to Read
This dua was taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a form of ruqyah (Islamic healing). The method described involves taking a bit of soil from the earth, mixing it with the saliva of the person reciting (or the sick person themselves), and then reciting this dua. The intention is to invoke Allah's healing power through these humble elements. When the mental toll is high, reciting this with sincere focus on Allah's ability to heal both body and mind is crucial. It's about connecting with the Divine source of all cures.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua emphasizes relying on Allah's permission ('bi-idhn rubbi-na') for healing. It teaches us that even the simplest elements of creation can become a means of cure when invoked with Allah's name and power. For the mental aspect of illness, reciting this reminds the individual that their suffering is known to Allah and that He is the ultimate Healer, capable of restoring peace and strength to the mind as well as the body. It fosters patience and trust (tawakkul) in Allah, which are vital for navigating the emotional challenges of sickness.

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When any person among us was sick, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would rub his hand (on the affected part) and say: 'O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the hardship, and heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease behind.' And sometimes we would mix our saliva with earth and say: 'In the name of Allah, with the soil of our earth, and the saliva of some of us, may our sick be healed by the permission of our Lord.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5729).
