Sickness
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2675

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fi dunyaya wa ukhray. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin row'ati. Allahumma-hfizni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimalee wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for anyone experiencing physical ailments, pain, or loss of function in their limbs or any part of their body. It's particularly poignant when a sickness is affecting your ability to move, work, or perform daily tasks. Recite it in the morning and evening, as it encompasses a broad request for Allah's protection and well-being throughout your day and night.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Raise your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly feeling your reliance on Allah for healing and protection. It's recommended to recite it consistently, making it a regular part of your supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a cornerstone for seeking overall well-being ('afiyah). 'Afiyah encompasses protection from all forms of harm – physical, spiritual, and material. By asking for 'afiyah, we are seeking Allah's covering over our entire lives. This specific supplication is not just for general health but a deep request for restoration of function and protection against debilitating conditions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that asking for 'afiyah is better than receiving great wealth or many blessings because true well-being is the foundation upon which all other blessings can be enjoyed.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The supplication of a servant is granted so long as he does not supplicate for sin or breaking of ties, so long as he is not hasty. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, how can one be hasty? He said: He says: 'I supplicated and I supplicated, but I did not receive a response, so he became disheartened and abandoned the supplication.' It was narrated from Abu Bakr that he said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication that I may say in my prayer. He said: Say: 'O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins but You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy upon me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.' Then say: 'O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next.' It was narrated from Abu Bakr that he said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I can say when I wake up in the morning and when I go to bed. He said: Say: 'O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord of all and its King, I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and from the evil of the devil and his polytheism, and from bringing evil upon myself or casting it upon any Muslim.' It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Khubayb that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: Say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the guidance, the God-consciousness, chastity and self-sufficiency.' Then he said: 'And when you wake up in the morning, and when you go to bed, say: O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.' (Book 26, Hadith 2675)
