Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 5727, 2194

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, the dust of our ground, with the saliva of some of us, our sick are healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillah, turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, shifau saqimina, bi'idhni rabbina.

When to Read

Recite this dua when experiencing a fever or any illness. It's a profound reminder that healing is ultimately from Allah, even when employing means like traditional remedies or prayers.

How to Read

This dua, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, involves a physical act of mixing the dust of the earth (symbolizing our humble origins and reliance on creation's elements) with saliva (a natural bodily substance). The intention is to seek Allah's (SWT) cure through this humble invocation. Place your hand on the ground, mix it with a little saliva, and then place it on the afflicted area, reciting this dua.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and Tawakul (reliance on Allah). It teaches us that no remedy works independently of Allah's will. The Prophet's ﷺ action demonstrates how faith is integrated into our daily lives and even our approach to health. It instills patience and gratitude during times of sickness, reminding us that even discomfort can be a means of purification and drawing closer to our Creator.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to visit some of us when we were ill and put his hand on the place of pain and recite: 'Bismillah. Turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, shifau saqimina, bi'idhni rabbina.' (In the name of Allah, the dust of our ground, with the saliva of some of us, our sick are healed by the permission of our Lord.) - Sahih al-Bukhari 5727. Another narration: 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when anyone complained to the Prophet (ﷺ) about any wound or burn, the Prophet (ﷺ) would wipe it with his finger and say: 'Bismillaah, turbatu ardina, biriqati ba'dina, yashfi saqeemana, bi idhni rabbina.' (With the name of Allah, the earth of our land and the saliva of some of us cure our sick, by the leave of our Lord.) - Sahih Muslim 2194.
