Dua for Relief from Pain, Swelling, and Ailments

Sickness
Sahih HadithKitab As-Salam (The Book of Greetings) 2202

In the Name of Allah (three times). I seek refuge in Allah's might and power from the evil of what I find and what I fear (seven times).

*Bismillah (three times)* *A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir (seven times)*

When to Read

When you experience any pain, discomfort, or physical ailment in your body, including swelling (edema), aches, or general sickness. This dua is a direct prophetic instruction for seeking relief from bodily afflictions.

How to Read

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us a specific method for this dua: 1. **Place your hand** directly on the area of your body that is hurting or affected (e.g., on a swollen leg, a painful joint, or wherever you feel discomfort). 2. While your hand is on the affected area, **recite 'Bismillah' (بِسْمِ اللهِ)** three times. 3. Immediately after, **recite the longer dua** – *"A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir"* (أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ) – seven times. Recite with sincerity and conviction, truly seeking Allah's refuge and healing.

Virtues & Benefits

This isn't just a supplication; it's a profound act of submission and trust in Allah's ultimate power. By placing our hand on the affected area, we engage physically, while our words engage spiritually, acknowledging Allah as the sole healer. The power lies in seeking refuge in His 'might and power,' affirming that nothing can harm us without His permission, and nothing can heal us except by His decree. The hadith itself testifies to its effectiveness: Uthman ibn Abi al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) used this very dua and Allah removed his suffering, demonstrating its immediate, tangible benefit for relief from pain and ailments.

Source & Authentication

'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a pain he had in his body ever since he became Muslim. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Place your hand on the area that hurts in your body and say 'Bismillah' three times, then say seven times: أَعُوذُ بِعِزَّةِ اللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ (A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir).' He said: I did that, and Allah removed what I was suffering from.
