Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5085

O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and debt. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave. There is no god but You.

Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wad-dain. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, la ilaha illa anta.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited during times of physical discomfort, including difficulty in urination due to sickness. It's particularly beneficial to say it upon waking and before sleeping, and anytime one feels unwell or worried about their health.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, visualizing your body being restored to health. Focus on each phrase, understanding its meaning and seeking Allah's protection and well-being. It is recommended to raise your hands while making this dua, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a complete request for holistic well-being, seeking protection from physical ailments ('afini fi badani, fi sam'i, fi basari), disbelief, debt, and the punishment of the grave. By asking for 'afiyah (well-being), we encompass all forms of good health and protection from harm, both in this life and the next. The repetition of 'la ilaha illa anta' emphasizes Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and the sole reliance on Him for all needs, especially during sickness.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Abi Talhah, that his father narrated to him: I went to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while he was sitting with his companions. He wore a garment covering him and was leaning on a cushion. He said: 'Here is so-and-so and here is so-and-so (referring to some of the companions). I did not see any of you come to me except that I recognized him, except for Jabir, who was not with you.' A man said: 'He is ill, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Send for him.' So he was brought, and he was suffering from a fever. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'As for this, I have not seen it in this form except at Uhud. I have seen him suffering from a fever, and he recited: 'Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wad-dain. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, la ilaha illa anta.' (O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and debt. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave. There is no god but You.)' Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'If Allah grants you health, then it is good. If He takes you in His mercy, then that is better for you.' He then asked: 'Do you wish that you owe nothing, and your debt be paid by Allah?' He replied: 'Yes.' The Prophet ﷺ then said: 'That is yours.'
