Dua for Relief from Chronic Joint Pain and Stiffness

Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2208

In the name of Allah, I did this three times, and I said: 'I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear,' seven times. So I did that, and Allah removed what was troubling me. Then I took my family and came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the pain in my body!' So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: 'Place your hand on the place where you feel pain in your body and say: In the name of Allah, three times, and say seven times: I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.'

Bismillahi fa'alatuhā thalātha marrāt, wa qultu: A'ūdhu bi'izzatillāhi wa qudratihi min sharri mā ajidu wa uhādhiru sab'a marrāt, fa fa'altu dhālika fa'adhhaba Allāhu mā bī. Fa'akhadhtu ahlī fa'ataytuhu fa qultu: Yā Rasūla Allāh, mā laqītu min wajain fī jawfī. Faqāla lī Rasūlu Allāhi ṣallā Allāhu 'alayhi wa sallam: « Ḍa' yādaka 'alā alladhī ya'lamu min jasadika wa qul bismillāhi thalāthan wa qul sab'a marrāt: A'ūdhu bi'izzatillāhi wa qudratihi min sharri mā ajidu wa uhādhiru »

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited when experiencing any form of physical pain, especially chronic joint pain and stiffness. It can be said at any time of day or night, whenever the pain intensifies or when seeking Allah's help and relief. It is particularly beneficial to recite it with full presence and sincerity when the pain becomes a significant burden.

How to Read

Find a quiet place where you can focus. Place your hand directly on the area of your body that is experiencing pain or stiffness. Recite 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) three times. Then, recite the main dua seven times: 'A'ūdhu bi'izzatillāhi wa qudratihi min sharri mā ajidu wa uhādhiru' (I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear). It's important to have firm belief and conviction in Allah's ability to heal and grant relief as you recite.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries immense blessings as it was taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. It empowers the believer by guiding them to directly seek Allah's protection and healing. By attributing the refuge to Allah's 'might' and 'power,' it reinforces the understanding that no affliction is beyond His ability to remove. The act of placing the hand on the affected area, combined with sincere supplication, is a tangible expression of reliance on Allah (tawakkul). The Prophet's ﷺ assurance that this practice removed the pain for the companion who sought his guidance is a strong motivation for us to adopt it.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Uthman bin Abi al-'As al-Thaqafi: He complained to Allah's Messenger ﷺ about a pain he felt in his body from the time he had embraced Islam. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to him: 'Place your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain, and say: Bismillah (In the name of Allah) three times, and say seven times: A'ūdhu bi'izzatillāhi wa qudratihi min sharri mā ajidu wa uhādhiru (I seek refuge in the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear).' 'Uthman said: I did that and Allah removed the pain from which I had been suffering, and I continued to advise my family to do this (i.e., recite this dua).
