Virtues & Benefits
Seeking refuge in Allah from various illnesses, including those that were prevalent or feared in the past and general 'evil diseases,' is a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It reflects a holistic approach to health, encompassing spiritual reliance and seeking divine protection. This practice reminds us that ultimate health and protection come from Allah alone.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them to seek refuge in Allah with certain words during times of calamity, and to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-barasi wal-jununi wal-judhami wa min sayyi'il-asqam.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from leprosy, madness, elephantiasis, and from all evil diseases.) This practice was taught by the Prophet (ﷺ) to remind us to turn to Allah in all circumstances, seeking His protection against physical ailments that can affect our ability to worship Him and live our lives fully.
