Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5742

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, the soil of our land, mingled with the saliva of some of us, will heal our sick by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, yushfa saqeemunah, bi-idni Rabbina

When to Read

This dua is particularly beneficial when you feel that a sickness, after a major bout, is still lingering or has left you weak and vulnerable. It's a beautiful supplication that acknowledges Allah's power through the simplest of His creations – the earth and our own bodies. You can recite this after waking, before sleeping, or at any time you feel the need to seek Allah's complete healing, especially when feeling the residual effects of an illness.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, often accompanied by the physical act of placing a finger on the ground, then lifting it after it had been mixed with saliva. This act symbolized combining the earth's inherent potential for healing (when blessed by Allah) with our own bodies' connection to Allah. While the physical act is a sunnah, the core is the sincere recitation with a firm belief in Allah's ability to heal. Place your hand on the earth (if possible) or visualize this act while reciting, focusing on Allah as the true Healer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua highlights the interconnectedness of creation and the immense power of Allah. It teaches us to rely on Allah even in the seemingly mundane elements of our world. By seeking healing through this supplication, we are reaffirming Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and acknowledging that all means, including the earth and our own being, are only effective by His will. It's a comprehensive way to ask for complete recovery, addressing the lingering weakness that often follows a serious illness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Our land's soil, some of our saliva, one of us can use it to cure his illness, by permission of Allah. He starts saying: Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, yushfa saqeemunah, bi-idni Rabbina.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5742). The companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to do that when they suffered from ailments.
