Dua for Healing and Strength in Times of Sickness

Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5750

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering, heal (him/her), for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib il-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifa'an la yughadiru saqaman.

When to Read

This powerful dua is best recited when facing any illness, whether it's a chronic condition like diabetes or cancer, or a temporary ailment. It's particularly poignant to recite it during times of intense pain or weakness, as the words directly address the suffering and seek comprehensive healing from the One who is truly able to grant it. You can recite it at any time, but making it a part of your daily supplications during sickness is highly recommended.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it's important to do so with sincere belief and conviction in Allah's power to heal. Raise your hands, as is customary during dua, and face the Qiblah if possible. Speak the words clearly and with a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is also beneficial to place your hand on the area of your body that is ailing while making the supplication, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did. Repeat it multiple times, with patience and persistence.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of reliance on Allah and an acknowledgment of His absolute power over all matters, including health and sickness. By calling upon Allah as the 'Lord of mankind' and the 'Healer,' we affirm that He is the ultimate source of all cure and relief. The request for 'a healing that leaves no illness behind' signifies a desire for complete restoration, not just temporary respite. This supplication embodies the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, demonstrating how he himself turned to Allah in times of need, reminding us that sincere prayer is a potent tool for seeking comfort and recovery.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Aisha: Whenever any person among the people of Allah's Messenger ﷺ was sick, he would treat him by passing his hand (over the afflicted part) and say: 'Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib il-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifa'an la yughadiru saqaman.' (O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the disease, heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Yours, a healing that does not leave any sickness behind.)
