Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا.

In the name of Allah! The soil of our land, mixed with the saliva of some of us, is a cure for our sick, by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, shifaa'u saqeemina, bi-idhn rabbina.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when someone is suffering from an ailment, particularly when a physical remedy is being applied. It's also suitable for general supplication for healing from mouth sores or gum problems, seeking Allah's complete recovery.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would use this method for healing. It involves taking some of the dust from the ground (representing the earth's purity and Allah's creation) and mixing it with his own saliva (a symbol of personal involvement and supplication). This mixture would then be applied to the afflicted area. The dua itself is recited with sincere intention and firm belief in Allah's power to heal. You can recite this dua and then gently apply a suitable, clean remedy (like salt water for mouth sores) to the affected area, or simply recite it as a prayer for relief.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and reliance on Him for all healing. It teaches us that even the simplest elements of creation, when combined with Allah's command, can be a means of cure. The Prophet's ﷺ action demonstrates a practical approach to seeking relief while attributing the ultimate power to Allah alone. It reminds us that healing comes from Allah, no matter the means. The Prophet ﷺ also taught a general dua for sickness: 'O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering, heal it – for You are the Healer. None can heal except You, with a healing that leaves no ailment behind.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5675, Sahih Muslim 2191).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Whenever a person among the Prophet's companions complained of an ailment, the Prophet ﷺ would say to them, 'Put yourself into the earth [i.e., place your forehead on the ground] and say: Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, riqu ba'dina, shifaa'u saqeemina, bi-idhn rabbina. (In the name of Allah! The soil of our land, mixed with the saliva of some of us, is a cure for our sick, by the permission of our Lord.)' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5743, Sahih Muslim 2194).
