Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5755

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, the soil of our land mixed with the saliva of some of us, is a cure for our sick ones, by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina biriqi ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idhnni rabbina.

When to Read

This profound dua can be recited when a child falls ill. It's particularly potent when a parent or guardian places their hand on the child's forehead or affected area while reciting it. The act of mixing the soil with saliva, as described in the hadith, is a symbolic gesture of seeking healing through the blessings of Allah, utilizing the very earth He created.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere belief and earnest supplication. Ideally, the person reciting should place their hand on the sick child's body (like the forehead or chest) while saying the words. The original practice involved mixing a bit of the earth from the ground with saliva, which has a symbolic meaning of humble reliance on Allah using elements of His creation for healing. Focus on the meaning of the words – that healing comes solely from Allah, the Most High, and this dua is a means of seeking His mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct supplication taught and practiced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, highlighting the importance of seeking healing through divine means. It embodies Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) by attributing cure only to Him. It teaches us humility and reliance on Allah, even when using physical means. Reciting it for a child is a beautiful expression of a parent's love and their commitment to seeking the best for their offspring through faith.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to visit some of his family members and would say: 'O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the disease, cure the sick, for You are the One Who cures, there is no cure but Your cure, a cure that leaves no disease behind.' And when he visited a sick person or a sick person was brought to him, he would say: 'O Allah, the Lord of the people, (Healer of the sick), cure the sick, for there is no cure but Your cure, no healing that will leave behind sickness.' And in another narration: 'Bismillahi turbatu ardina biriqi ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idhn rabbina.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5755). This narration, concerning the mixture of soil and saliva, is a specific method of seeking cure when illness struck, emphasizing Allah's power to heal through seemingly simple means.
