Seeking Tranquility: Dua for Peace of Mind Amidst Trials

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or that You have taught to anyone from Your creation, or that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is a direct plea to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) for relief from sadness and anxiety. Recite it during times of trial, when you feel overwhelmed by worries, or when sadness weighs heavily on your heart. It’s particularly beneficial when you feel your circumstances are beyond your control and you need a spiritual anchor.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincere focus and conviction. Start by acknowledging Allah's (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) absolute control over all matters, as mentioned in the opening ('My forelock is in Your hand'). Raise your hands (if possible) and pour out your heart, truly feeling the weight of your worries and the hope for His relief. Utter the words with clarity and a deep understanding of their meaning, asking Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) to make the Quran a source of solace for you.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of this dua is seeking profound inner peace and relief from sadness and worry by turning to the ultimate source of comfort – Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and His divine book, the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself taught this comprehensive prayer, highlighting its significance. By asking Allah to make the Quran 'the spring of my heart,' 'the light of my chest,' 'the banisher of my sadness,' and 'the reliever of my worries,' we are asking for spiritual renewal, clarity, and the ultimate solution to all our anxieties. This dua connects us directly to Allah's infinite power and wisdom, reminding us that He is the ultimate resolver of our troubles.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or that You have taught to anyone from Your creation, or that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Quran the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety,' but Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) would take away his anxiety and grief and give him in their stead joy."
