Seeking Solace from Allah When the World Feels Heavy

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men (oppression).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua whenever you feel overwhelmed by life's challenges. It's particularly potent when facing specific anxieties like overwhelming sadness, feeling unable to act, a lack of motivation, fear, excessive worry about finances, or the pressure of difficult relationships. Say it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet ﷺ taught, to seek Allah's protection throughout the day and night.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity, raising your hands slightly if possible, and directing your focus solely to Allah. Understand the meaning of each phrase you utter. This isn't just a recitation; it's a direct plea to your Creator for strength and relief from the burdens you feel. Make it a regular part of your remembrance of Allah (dhikr).

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a powerful shield against many common afflictions of the heart and mind. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress and sorrow, we acknowledge that true peace comes only from Him. Protection from helplessness and laziness ensures we are empowered to act with purpose. Seeking refuge from cowardice and stinginess cultivates noble character. Finally, protection from overwhelming debt and oppression (being overcome by men) covers significant worldly anxieties, reminding us that Allah is the ultimate controller and sustainer. It transforms worries into a means of drawing closer to Allah.
