Dua for Sadness When the Beauty of the World Seems to Fade

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is enacted. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to one of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept secret in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness, and a remover of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana Rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you feel overwhelmed by sadness, and the world around you seems to lose its color. It's a prayer to turn to when your heart feels heavy, and you struggle to find joy or peace in your surroundings. Recite it during times of personal distress, after facing disappointments, or when a general sense of melancholy settles in.

How to Read

It is recommended to recite this dua with sincerity and humility, raising your hands as you do so, especially if reciting it at night. Imagine your heart and mind opening up to the healing power of the Qur'an. Believe that Allah (SWT) has the power to lift your sadness and replace it with the beauty and peace that comes from His divine words.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua directly asks Allah (SWT) to make the Qur'an a source of healing for the heart and soul. By seeking solace in the divine words, we aim to transform feelings of sadness and anxiety into comfort and clarity. The Hadith itself highlights the immense power of the Qur'an as a divine remedy for emotional and mental distress, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah, he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is enacted. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to one of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept secret in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness, and a remover of my anxiety, except that Allah will take away his anxiety and grief and give him in their stead, happiness.' Abdullah said: 'So I said: O Messenger of Allah! Should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, indeed! It is recommended for everyone who hears them to learn them.' (Sahih Hasan)
