Dua for Sadness When Longing for a Deeper Spiritual Connection

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is inevitable. Your justice in my case is absolute. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept exclusively to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the dispeller of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitābik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This dua is especially potent when you feel a spiritual dryness, a distance from Allah, or when sadness weighs heavily on your heart. Recite it during times of introspection, after obligatory prayers, or whenever you feel the need to rekindle your connection with the Divine and seek solace.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate source of relief and spiritual connection. Raise your hands in supplication as you did for other duas. Focus on the meaning of the words and the profound request you are making to your Creator. Imagine the Qur'an becoming a source of life and light for your heart and soul.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication directly addresses the root of spiritual disconnection and sadness by asking Allah to make the Qur'an the means of healing and solace. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion who complained of sadness, highlighting its efficacy in dispelling worry and grief. It opens the doors to understanding and appreciating Allah's Book, which in turn deepens faith and brings contentment.

Source & Authentication

Ahmad narrated in his Musnad from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your slave woman, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is ever effective, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or which You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the healer of my anxiety.' So it was said to him: 'Shall we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is necessary for everyone who hears them to learn them.'
