Dua for Sadness and the Struggle to Resist Negative Thoughts

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is necessary. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, that You have taught to any one of Your creation, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdoka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya huku-muka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa-uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabi-ka, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heart full of hope in Allah's mercy. Focus on the meaning of the words as you speak them. It's beneficial to raise your hands slightly while reciting, as this is a Sunnah in supplication. Repeat it as many times as you feel necessary, especially during the times when Allah is most likely to accept our duas, like after prayers or in the latter part of the night.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of many mental struggles: the feeling of being overwhelmed and the inability to find peace. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' it seeks a profound transformation. Just as spring brings life and renewal to the earth, the Qur'an, when truly embraced, has the power to revitalize our spirits, illuminate our understanding, and dispel the darkness of sadness and worry. It's a comprehensive plea for divine intervention in our emotional and mental well-being.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to a man who complained of sadness and worry. He instructed him to seek refuge in Allah with these words and to make the Qur'an the source of his comfort and guidance. This highlights the immense therapeutic power of the Qur'an and sincere supplication in overcoming emotional distress.
