Dua for Sadness and Regret When Falling Short

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 771

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to one of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibn 'abdik, ibn amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitibik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Yahya related to me from Malik, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Dukayn, the freed slave of the last Asad tribe, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'No servant suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your slave-woman. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is enacted, Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, or taught to anyone from Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or which You have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a reliever of my anxiety' – except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief, and replace them with joy.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is necessary for everyone who hears them to learn them.'
