Dua for Sadness and Longing for the Prophet's Intercession

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially beneficial when you're feeling weighed down by sadness, worry, or a sense of hopelessness. It's a comprehensive prayer for seeking Allah's protection from inner turmoil and external pressures, which can often accompany periods of longing or distress.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a focused heart. Raise your hands as you would during supplication, looking towards the sky. Believe that Allah (SWT) hears your call and has the power to relieve your distress. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly potent during the times when duas are more likely to be answered, such as after prayers, during the last third of the night, or when you are prostrating.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, offers profound protection from debilitating emotional states like sadness and distress (hazn and ham). It also seeks refuge from practical challenges like helplessness (ajz), laziness (kasal), fear (jubn), and miserliness (buhl). Furthermore, it guards against the crushing burden of debt (ghalabat ad-dayn) and the humiliation of being overcome by others (qahr ar-rijal). By reciting this, you are actively seeking Allah's shield against these ills, fostering a more resilient and tranquil state of being, and strengthening your connection to Him in times of need.
